One reason that Manhattan Review established an office in Beijing is the city's reputation as a site of higher learning. The city is home to two of the world's top postsecondary institutions: Peking University and Tsinghua University, both of which have been ranked among the top 60. Peking University, with an enrollment of about 30,000 students equally split between graduates and undergraduates, offers degrees in nearly 200 specialties. Peking University houses the National School of Development (one of China's most important think tanks) and the Shenzhen Graduate School (a satellite campus that includes the HSBC Business School), and the Health Science Center (a highly selective medical school). Tsinghua University is known for its Department of Mathematical Sciences and for its engineering programs, which were recently ranked higher than those of MIT by U.S. News & World Report. Other important institutions located in the city include the University of Science and Technology Beijing, the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, and Capital University of Economics and Business.
Manhattan Review was also attracted to Beijing because of the city's climate for business. Approximately 75% of the local economy is based on services, especially information technology, real estate, scientific research, and professional services. Technological innovation is funded by a combination of Chinese capital and substantial foreign investment. Additionally, manufacturing of automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and aerospace products has increased in recent years, and food processing remains an industry of some significance. Over 50 Fortune Global 500 companies are based in Beijing, which is more than any other city. China National Petroleum and Sinopec Group are ranked in the top 10, and other Beijing companies on the list include Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, China State Construction Engineering, China Construction Bank, Bank of China, and China Life Insurance (all of which are in the top 60). Meet a Beijing Tutor: Jill H.
Jill H. has been affiliated with Manhattan Review in Beijing since 2015, teaching prep courses and private tutoring sessions for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). She first came to China in 2013 after being hired by an agency that offers English instruction to business executives. Jill has a total of 11 years of English language and TOEFL teaching experience.
Jill graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in political science, and then earned a master's degree in education from Boston University. She is known as an inspiring educator who motivates her students to fulfill their full potential, and her TOEFL clients have gone on to study at many of the world's top universities. Her outside interests include music, film, and sports.
