Although SAT data is usually published in terms of average and/or average ranges for new students, a small number of institutions report their acceptance rates by SAT score. Among these schools is the University of California-Los Angeles, which has been ranked in the top 25 by U.S. News & World Report. UCLA data show that students with composite SAT scores between 1290 and 1460 (on the 2016 1600-point scale) are accepted at a rate of about 16%. Applicants with SAT scores above 1460 have acceptance odds of almost 52%, making these applicants more than three times as likely to gain admission as their lower-scoring peers. Furthermore, less than 13% of all new students at UCLA scored lower than 1290 on the SAT, and less than 1% scored less than 900. These numbers are striking, especially when they are compared to the admit rates by GPA. Approximately 61% of applicants with a perfect 4.0 unweighted GPA are offered admission, but the admit rate for students with GPAs between 3.70 and 3.99 is only 27%. In short, elite SAT performance is much more strongly associated with UCLA acceptance than nearly perfect GPAs.
